Odd Homes Spotted — Just For Fun

In real estate, we spend a lot of time perusing the internet looking at listings. Listing agents assess the comparable properties and buyers agents find opportunities for their clients. Every now and then, we come across an odd remodel or interesting piece of decor that will make us scratch our heads but here are 5 listings that take it to a whole new level.

1. TX Trove

Sitting on 2 acres in Richmond, Texas, this traditional estate looks normal enough from the exterior…

But continuing the tour inside shows us that the owner has a bold interpretation of the word “collector”.

Our expert listing agents may have recommended that these sellers declutter a bit and maybe do some light staging so potential buyers could picture themselves in the home.

Maybe relocate a few of the “roommates”?

2. Clownin’ Around in Canada

Here’s another home of an enthusiastic collector. Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Niagara Falls, this quaint home in Bratford is small in size with a big surprise. Check out the listing video. Warning for those with Coulrophobia (fear of clowns).

When the house hit the market it caught the attention of real estate agents, homebuyers and the press. Vice did some sleuthing and was able to reach a family member for comment.

VICE reached Michael McMannis, son of the owners (who’ve lived in the house for 30 years) and confirmed that the family is not in fact related to It or any other deranged clowns. No, they’re actually a cute elderly couple in their 80s who started buying the clowns in an effort to keep McMannis’ stepfather from boozing.

The interesting technique worked out well. Let’s hope they he continues his progress wherever they move to. The home has now sold — for over the list price!

3. You’ve Cats to Be Kitten Me Right Meow

Moving on from eccentric collections to borderline obsessions, “Catopia” is 2,500 square feet of feline fun! ಠ_

The property includes 20 acres of private land in Concho, AZ (approximately 200 miles northeast of Phoenix) and it is currently on the market for $225,000 after a recent $15K price reduction!

As the listing agent advised “If you love cats this is the home for you! If not bring your sandblaster!”

Good advice.

4. A House with So Mushroom!

Unlike the listings above, this home in Pittsford, NY is extraordinary at first sight. Nicknamed the “Mushroom House”, you could live in this whimsical structure for a cool $6,900 per month.

According to the Zillow listing, architect James Johnson fashioned this unique dwelling after a stem of Queen Anne’s Lace.

The inside is almost cave-like and filled with unique details.

This photo gives a sense of scale as the furniture is dwarfed by the expansive living space and tall concave ceilings.

5.A Sanctuary (Literally)

This property, last sold in 2013, was a historic church converted to condos. Since the basic structure and aesthetic were kept intact, this unit has 38-foot vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows and an altar for a kitchen counter. It’s also a whopping 5,000 square feet according to Zillow. Holy Moly!

Sophistication or sacrilege? We’ll stay out of that debate! But, if nothing else, it certainly is unique.
