Community Spotlight — Our Palms Pardee Picks

Tucked between Mar Vista and Culver City, Palms is a small but mighty Westside neighborhood. It only covers two square miles and is a mostly residential area, but the historic suburb has a lot to offer.

Its prime location is one of its many selling points. Palms is halfway to everywhere in the city making it a dream neighborhood for those that commute every day. This has always been one of its biggest allures. In the late 1800s, Palms served as the halfway point for people traveling from the city to the ocean. It still lives by its old motto: “No cold winters. No hot summers. No saloons at the Palms.”

Here are some of our favorite things to eat, see, and do in Palms.

What to Do

Want to unleash your inner artist? Sign up for an art class at the Kline Academy of Fine Art. It’s open to both novices and pros. If you need some relaxation, treat yourself to a Swedish massage at Tranquility Body Spa. The zen spot offers a variety of services at relatively affordable prices. The Palms-Rancho Park Branch Library is another great place to hang out. They host family-friendly events like meditation workshops and toddler storytime. And last, but certainly not least, one of the coolest and weirdest places to visit in Palms and all of Los Angeles is the Museum of Jurassic Technology. It is unlike any other museum you’ve ever seen. The dimly lit space is filled with strange, old relics. You’ll leave feeling a bit confused but that’s kind of the point.

Where to Shop

If you’re in the market for a fresh new wardrobe that makes a statement, look no further than designer boutique Anonymous LA. They carry a curated collection of clothing and accessories for both men and women from a range of designer brands. For stocking up on fresh local produce and other goodies, check out the Motor Avenue Farmers Market. It’s open every Sunday from 9am to 2pm.

What to Eat

There is no shortage of great places to eat in Palms. You have The Doughroom, a casual pizza and beer spot complete with a “happier hour.” If you’re in the mood for something a bit fancier, make a reservation at n/naka. The Japanese tasting menu restaurant serves dishes that star vegetables from their organic garden. Palms is also home to Mayura, an Indian restaurant and a favorite of the late LA Times food critic Jonathan Gold. If you just want to chill with your friends and watch a game, The Garage on Motor Avenue is a great hangout. And if you want to let loose, go to Boardwalk 11 to sing karaoke and nosh on chicken wings and quesadillas. Snoop Dogg and Jimmy Kimmel have been spotted there together so you know it’s going to be a good time.
