6 Ways to Make Room for Baby in Your Home
Welcoming a new baby into your home is an uber exciting thing but with it also comes a slew of worries one of them being how on earth you’re going to make space for your little one and all the things they need. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to ensure baby has more than enough space in your home. Read on for our tips!
Declutter, declutter, declutter
There’s a reason expecting mamas get the urge to declutter and nest before baby comes. They’re literally making space for their bundle of joy! This is the perfect time to Marie Kondo your home and get rid of anything that doesn’t bring you joy anymore. Sort through everything including clothes, kitchen items, the junk in your garage, and even sentimental items. Not only is decluttering a super practical thing to do before the baby arrives, it’ll also help elevate the vibe of your space so your newborn comes home to a serene and clutter-free oasis.
Get creative with storage
Once you’ve donated or thrown out the clutter, now it’s time to get creative with storage to really maximize the space that you do have. Challenge yourself to go around your home and find hidden areas that can be used to store things. Also, don’t be afraid to go vertical and use your wall space to hang clothes or put up shelves to hold books or other baby essentials. We highly recommend jumping on Pinterest for this. It’s filled with creative and fun storage ideas.
Buy multi-tasking furniture
If your home or nursery is tight on space, we suggest getting some multi-tasking furniture. You can easily add a changing mat to the top of a dresser so it doubles as a changing table. Or, opt for a crib with built-in storage. Some of our favorite places to shop for baby things are Caro Bambino and Restoration Hardware Baby & Child in Santa Monica. Also, the container store is always your best friend for finding all sorts of handy storage solutions.
Keep it simple
Especially if you’re a new parent, it’s very easy to get caught up with buying all the baby things everyone says you absolutely need. The truth is though, a baby doesn’t need 20 plush animals, gadgets, and a closet full of clothes to be happy, healthy, and nourished. So before you start loading up the minivan at the baby store, remember to keep it simple and just get the essentials your baby will actually need and use. In other words, skip the giant stuffed giraffe. And if you’re unsure of whether or not you’ll need something, just hold off on buying it until you actually do. It’s also a good idea to create a minimalist baby shower registry with only the essentials so you’re not bombarded with gifts you don’t need from friends and family.
Transform a space into a nursery
If you don’t have a nursery ready for baby, you can always create a nook somewhere in your home and transform it into one. A walk-in closet, a den, an office, or even just a nook in your master bedroom can can all become a chic and convenient mini nursery. Like we said, babies don’t really need a ton of things. If you do decide to convert a corner of your bedroom into a nursery, make sure the decor of your baby stuff matches the decor of your bedroom so there’s a seamless flow.
Expand into a bigger home
If all the decluttering and space-saving tricks just aren’t cutting it, it might be time to move into a bigger home. Perhaps one with a roomy second or third bedroom that baby can grow into and a big backyard for running around. Whatever you choose, ensure the neighborhood is family-friendly with lots of good schools.
