International Coastal Cleanup Day — A Fun + Successful Day of Volunteering

The Halton Pardee team headed to the beach for a cleanup in celebration of International Coastal Cleanup Day!

Our Beaches are some of the most important parts of our community — drawing in people from all over the world and the Halton Pardee team is passionate about keeping them clean and beautiful!

On Saturday, September 16th, we partnered with one of our favorite environmental nonprofits, The Surfrider Foundation, to take part in a clean up of the shore. We combed the sand, picking up bags of trash and debris. Once the bags were filled, everyone dumped the trash to be sorted and weighed. Everyone was able to see tangible results of our collective effort while learning about the amount and types of trash that litter our beaches. We couldn’t believe that a total of 122 pounds of trash was collected in just 3 hours of cleaning up!

Also in attendance was 5Gyres, a nonprofit that empowers action against the global health crisis of plastic pollution through science, art, education, and adventure. We learned about the amount of polystyrene within our oceans. We wrote letters and shared our message to the state representatives to encourage a polystyrene ban.
