Top 10 Events + Activities

For Mom's Day This Sunday

While most Mother’s Day events revolve around brunches, you can find things to do that don’t involve a breakfast plate if you’re willing to think outside of the box. From a trip to a historic castle to an afternoon at one of L.A.’s loveliest attractions, you’ll find plenty of ways to show your mom how much she means to you. So stock up on some of our favorite gift ideas, buy her a bouquet of flowers and then treat her to an afternoon at one of these Mother’s Day events.

1. Sugar & Stilettos Bake Sale Extravaganza – West LA

Food and fashion, always a potent combination, come together at the seventh annual Sugar & Stilettos bake sale extravaganza (2306 Midvale Ave). Los Angeles’ top bakeries and restaurants—think Milo & Olive, Bouchon, Sweet Lady Jane—will be providing baked goods up for sale and there’ll be exclusive raffle items that will make eventgoers giddy with excitement. What’s more? All proceeds will go to Westside Food Bank. Tip: There is free street parking so get there before the mob of shoes/sugar lovers.

2. MOMentum Place – Topanga

You likely dragged your parents to the circus as a kid, and now it’s time to return the favor. Theatricum Botanicum’s “Momentum Place” crafts a fantastical world of aerial and circus performers, dancers and musicians in a rustic outdoor amphitheater. The event is staged specifically in honor of moms, and complements an optional pre-performance brunch.

3. Mother’s Day Tea and Tour at the Castle Green – Pasadena

The Moorish/Victorian Castle Green is the idyllic escape for old Hollywood glam. Though it’s typically not open for tours, you can explore the 1899 building and its majestic domes, arches, pillars, balconies, verandahs and gardens during this Mother’s Day tour. Tack on tea time at noon for an additional charge.

4. Wild for the Planet

It’s always a good occassion for cute animals, but Mother’s Day seems like an especially great one. Honor the planet at the L.A. Zoo’s elongated Earth Day celebration, with special animal enrichment presentations and a rotating roster of educators. Swing by each weekend for a performance by Swazzle’s Puppet Show and an Upcycling Inspiration Lab for ideas on creative crafting without waste.

5. Stroll through a flowery garden

Los Angeles—and California as a whole—is a pretty amazing place, botanically speaking. Even though some of us can reach out our windows and pluck an avocado from a tree, a trip to one of L.A.’s many manicured gardens reveals vegetation that simply can’t be found on our city streets—just don’t try plucking a flower for mom at any of these spots.

6. Take a day trip

She put up with your back seat shenanigans for years, so the least you can do is chauffeur your mom around for the day. From wine tasting in Santa Barbara to vintage hunting in the desert, these are the perfect out-of-town getaways for Mother’s Day.

7. Picnic in the park

Impress your mom with your cooking and packing skills with a picnic in one of L.A.’s public parks. Whether you’re an art aficionado or a devoted dog owner, there’s a slice of nature that fits your lifestyle—roll out a blanket or take a stroll through one of these 21 spots.

8. Take mom to a museum

Brush up on a bit of culture this Mother’s Day with a trip to one of L.A.’s finest institutions. Stick to something scenic like the Getty Villa for a special treat, though we’re sure your mom will get a kick out of you marveling at the Natural History Museum’s dinosaur bones like a little kid.

9. Treat yourselves to a spa day

Relax, unwind and be pampered from head to toe. Being a mom can be tough work, and since you’re reading this page about treating your mother to the very best, we’re going to assume she did a pretty good job raising you. In other words, treat the woman to a top massage, scrub or facial.

10. Brunch it up

Flowers are nice, sure. A box of chocolates, too. But the real way to your mom’s heart? Brunch. Lucky for you, Los Angeles does brunch like it’s nobody’s business. Whether your mom loves a classic eggs Benedict or a decadent plate of French toast, these brunches will have her thinking you’re the best son or daughter ever.
